BEACON HILL, is one of Boston’s oldest communities getting its name from a beacon that once stood atop its hill, was erected to warn local communities of enemy danger. It is known as one of the most expensive and picturesque areas of Boston offering charming, historic architecture, cobblestone lined streets and old colonial brick sidewalks with gas lamps. The name Boston Common originated from the land’s original use which allowed the community to use a common pasture for livestock. The area initially had three hills which were leveled for development. It’s shoreline and bodies of water has a massive filling in of earth, increasing Boston’s land mass by 150% with Charles Street being one of the new roads created from the project. In the 18th century, it’s hills were leveled and Mount Vernon Street was laid with many beautiful mansions . Today Beacon Street and other parts of Beacon Hill are one of the most sought after, wealthiest neighborhoods in Boston. The Massachusetts State House with its brightly gilded golden dome is a prominent landmark just across from the Boston Common. Many people visit Beacon Hill to experience its rich culture, historical landmarks, antique shops, boutiques, museums, fine dining and galleries.
